Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Are you living in a northern paradise like us? It definitely has it’s perks, but it comes with some challenges, like ensuring you’re getting enough vitamin D.

But why should you care about your vitamin D levels? Vitamin D plays an essential role in our bodies in building and maintaining bones and teeth, improving your immune system, maintaining mental health, and in regulating inflammation. When it is low, you may feel tiredness, experience weakness or aches, and be more prone to stress fractures.

So, how can you make sure you're getting enough of this sunshine vitamin, even when the sun is playing hide-and-seek behind the clouds and mountain peaks? Here are a few tips to help you boost your vitamin D levels:

  1. Get outside

When the sun makes an appearance, try to spend some time outdoors. Even a short walk around town or a hike on a sunny day can help your body produce vitamin D. But, keep in mind that in Canada our bodies can only make vitamin D from the sun between the months of May and October due to angle of the suns rays.

  2. Eat your way to D

Some foods are rich in vitamin D, such as fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products. So, make sure to include these in your diet regularly.

  3. Supplement smartly

If you think you're not getting enough vitamin D from sunlight and food, consider taking a supplement. It's always a good idea to check with your friendly neighbourhood pharmacist (that's us!) to find the right supplement for you.

  4. Let there be light

Investing in a light therapy lamp can also help, especially during the long winter months.

Don't let the lack of daylight this winter get you down - follow these helpful tips and keep those vitamin D levels up!
